Intel, Micron Introduce 25nm Flash Memory

Intel and Micron officially announced 25nm process technology.

Intel and Micron Technology announced today that a new era in storage, smartphones, and media players has begun with the introduction of 25-nanometer NAND technology. Not only is this the smallest process for NAND flash memory, but currently the smallest process for semiconductor technology in general. Who said bigger was better?

The joint venture between Intel and Micron will be manufactured by IM Flash Technologies. The 25nm process will cram a whopping 8 GB of storage on a single NAND chip. Intel's announcement today paints a pretty picture on the NAND's actual size: measuring just 167mm2, it's small enough to fit through the hole in the middle of a CD, but packs 10 times the data capacity of the disc.

With that said, manufacturers can cram more storage into their devices, or use the extra room to throw in a new feature. In any case, the number of chips to provide the same amount of storage space has been cut down to half the load. As an example, a 256 GB solid-state drive used 64 NAND chips now only requires 32. A 16 GB flash card now only need two chips, whereas a 32 GB smartphone now only needs four.

Tom Rampone, vice president and general manager, Intel NAND Solutions Group, said that the new 25nm processing should speed up the adaption of solid-state drives. "Through our continued investment in IMFT, we're delivering leadership technology and manufacturing that enable the most cost-effective and reliable NAND memory," he said.

Currently Intel is sampling the 25nm, 8 GB NAND, and plans to kick it into high gear with mass production in Q2 2010.

Nvidia Found Guilty of Infringing Rambus Patents

Rambus rolls on with its memory technology patents.

In summer 2008, Rambus claimed that "a number of Nvidia products" with memory controllers for SDR, DDR, DDR2, DDR3, GDDR, and GDDR3 SDRAM infringe upon 17 Rambus patents, leading to the expected lawsuit.

Last Friday, the U.S. International Trade Commission ruled that Nvidia violated three of five patents held by Rambus which could lead to a possible U.S. ban on the import of some Nvidia products.

"We will continue to vigorously protect our patented inventions for the benefit of our shareholders and in fairness to our paying licensees," said Rambus General Counsel Tom Lavelle. "We would be interested in having productive settlement discussions with Nvidia."

Nvidia, expectedly, isn't so eager to set up any sort of payment schedule. According to Reuters, Nvidia is waiting for a decision from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office later this year on whether or not Rambus has full claim to some of the patents involved in the current dispute with Nvidia. If Rambus is found to not have full claim, it would change the outcome of the ITC's ruling considerably.

"We're going to continue to take the necessary steps to move forward with our arguments, not necessarily just with the ITC, but certainly in the Patent and Trademark Office," said David Shannon, Nvidia general counsel.

News of this comes just after Rambus' $900 million settlement with Samsung over patent disagreements.

Lian Li's T1 Pitstop PC Case Looks Like a Spider

It takes a lot to produce a really innovative computer case. Sure, enthusiasts produce a lot of great case-mods but for every truly great chassis we see from a manufacturer, there are ten 'nothing special' cases.

We're not sure if the T1 Pitstop from Lian Li falls into the great or 'meh' category, but they sure did go all out marketing. The T1 Pitstop is an open air a Mini-ATX case with room for a full size PSU. Oh and it's shaped like a spider.

God of War PC Case Mod is Awe Inspiring

We love non-traditional case mods, and I'm personally a huge God of War fan. This latest case mod is those two worlds collided.

A LAN party in Brazil was graced by a stunning Kratos case mod that held a full PC inside the figure with flashing LED lights on the outside. Details are scant at the moment, but a short video clip proves that this thing is real. Check it out below:

Thermaltake, Nvidia Jointly Launch Gaming Case

Nvidia Edition cases hitting the market along with Fermi.

While stopping over at Thermaltake's suite, we noticed a custom designed case with an Nvidia logo on the front.

Although not fancy, the case delivers an efficient layout with one specialty: dedicated air channeling for Nvidia's upcoming Fermi-based graphics cards.

Called the Element V Nvidia Edition, the case has multiple large intake fans, as well as a specialized cooling duct that would partially cover the ends of Fermi cards. Thermaltake told us that this way, a dedicated intake fan will draw in cool air from the outside and direct the air flow right into the intakes of installed cards. Designed for multiple graphics cards, Thermaltake told us that Nvidia officially recommends the use of Fermi-certified cases when running multiple cards.

On the side sits a large panel fan and the are fans on the top of the case that help draw hot air out of the system too. We asked if "Nvidia Edition" cases are going to be available from other vendors and were told that for now, Thermaltake is the only maker.

Availability will be at the end of Feburary/early March and will retail for $179 USD.

Intel Shows Off the Best Core i7, i5 Case Mods

So... would this be a best case scenario?

We all love a good case mod, and so does Intel. In fact, the chipmaker challenged the mod community to come up with the greatest case mods ever using Core i7 and Core i5 parts (though some made it through using previous generation parts).

Candy Corngrats to Our Corsair Case Contestants

Postage Stamp-Sized SSDs On The Horizon

1 TB in a stamp-sized SSD sounds too good to be true.

The Nikkei reports that a team of Japanese researchers have developed a technology that will help reduce the size of SSDs by more than 90-percent. This will make the drives cheaper to produce while boosting energy efficiency by 70-percent. The new technology should also help SSDs become the standard storage system in the near future, possibly even replacing current platter-based mechanical drives--at least for system booting.

Led by Professor Tadahiro Kuroda, the team is composed of researchers from Toshiba and the Keio University in Tokyo. The team has created a 1 TB SSD prototype the size of a small postage stamp, consisting of 128 NAND flash memory chips and one controller chip. The miniature storage device boasts transfer speeds of 2 Gbps, and also uses radio communications which will ultimately make it cheaper to manufacture.

Currently the team doesn't expect to see commercial versions of the product until 2012.

WD's 1TB SATA 6.0 Gbps HDD Out in Japan

Western Digital is selling an HDD in Japan that uses the SATA 6.0 Gbps interface.

TechConnect reports that over in Japan, hard drive manufacturer Western Digital has introduced a new Caviar Black model that uses the speedy SATA 6.0 Gbps interface. Codenamed WD1002FAEX, the 3.5-inch, 1 TB drive has a 64 MB buffer memory, and operates at 7200 rotations per minute (RPM). The drive also features a sound output of 33 dBA while seeking.

Legit Reviews adds to the report, translating information provided by Japanese website Akiba. According to the site, WD's new drive has a maximum internal transfer rate of 126 MB/s. The drive also consumes 6.8 W of power during an active state, 0.7 W while in sleep mode.

Right now WD is selling the WD1002FAEX drive for 10,000 yen-- that's roughly around $111 USD, making it slightly more expensive than the SATA 3.0 Gbps model (WD1001FALS).

Currently there's no indication that the drive will hit the States, however this is a good indication that a new wave of SATA 6.0 Gbps drives from WD could be on the horizon soon.

Convert Your CF Cards into an SSD

This adapter turns CF cards into a pretend SSD.

RAM and memory card manufacturer Walton Chaintech said on Tuesday that it has launched a new CF (CompactFlash) card converter. This device will allow consumers to use CF cards as an SSD, and serves as a capacity enhancement to HDDs already installed in the system. Called the Apogee SSD Converter, any CF card will fit within the 2.5-inch device, however the company naturally suggests that users install its new CF 606X high speed memory card for optimum performance.

Walton Chaintech said that the converter supports up to two CF cards using a Raid 0 and Raid 1 disk array. This obviously enables users to use both cards as one large storage device, or use one card as a mirrored drive. In addition to the high speed SATA II transfer interface, the converter functions like a traditional SSD, providing up to 55 MB/s read speeds (a step up from mainstream 5400-rpm HDDs). The converter also makes it easy to replace CF cards without the need to remove the device.

In addition to the Apogee SSD Converter, Walton Chaintech also revealed a few details on its CF 606X memory card. According to the company, the card provides write speeds of up to 91 MB/s, and read speeds of up to 93 MB/s. The CF 606X series will also come in two capacities: 16 GB and 32 GB.

"The incredible capacity of the product will allow users to perform uninterrupted recording of high image video with DSLR cameras without missing any bits and pieces of the fascinating moments in life worth capturing," the company said.

There was no indication on when these products will be available, or their eventual pricing.

Shuttle: Laptop Mobos and OEM Laptops

Others have tried and failed, but Shuttle is giving laptop motherboard standardization another shot. Oh, and they're going to manufacture laptops, too.

Shuttle is announcing its SPA and Micro SPA laptop motherboard standardization plans today, and if everything goes as planned, SPA will change the way we think about laptop lifespan. "Think of a laptop with all the advantages of a desktop," said Nick Villalobos, Marketing Manger for Shuttle. "SPA is going to be the future of notebooks."

SPA and Micro SPA are composed of two major components: The unchanging motherboard and customizable daughtercard(s). In the included pictures, you see the motherboards at the heart of the SPA/mSPA system. These motherboards house the CPU, which can vary from Intel's Pine Trail, Montevina and ULV to Congo from AMD, memory slots, and the basic I/O suite. The memory type and speed is dependent on the CPU, but the I/O suite is essentially the same across the board: two USB, HDMI, power and VGA. Graphics can be integrated, again depending on chipset and CPU, or discrete, which would use the aforementioned daughtercard. Other daughtercards would also house connections like eSATA, DisplayPort, and anything else the OEM would desire.

So where's the advantage? If SPA is widely adopted in the industry, any consumer with a SPA-based notebook will be able to upgrade his or her laptop with little effort and no headaches. Need a new video card so you can play Crysis 2? No soldering, no new laptop, no problem. Essentially, you will be able to buy a high-quality chassis that you really enjoy, and swap out the internal components when the time comes, even down to the keyboard.

So far, the details are few, but the concept is very strong. Shuttle wants this tech to be open, and is willing to work with any company, regardless of size, when it comes to engineering new daughtercards, chipset support, and OEM manufacturing.

All of the SPA motherboards will also be available in Shuttle OEM laptops starting later this year. From 10-inches all the way to 17.3-inches, and including AMD and Nvidia discrete graphics, Shuttle is seriously looking to change the laptop landscape.

Intel Unveils Next-Gen Atom Pinetrail Chips

You may have seen from our front page hardware features that there's a new Intel Atom CPU and platform in town.

The newest Intel Atom platform for netbooks consists of a new 45nm Atom N450, and a new low-power NM10 Express Chipset. For entry level desktop PCs, it consists of either the Atom D410 or the dual core D510, both also made on the 45nm process, also paired with the Intel NM10 Express Chipset.

One of the most significant features of the new platform is the integration of memory controller and graphics into the CPU, a first in the industry on x86 chips. That means two chips (CPU, chipset) instead of the previous three (CPU, chipset, I/O controller hub), a lower TDP, and substantial reductions in cost, overall footprint and power. Intel claims that this new platform features a 20 percent improvement in average power and a smaller package size over the previous Atom platform.

The N450 is a single core Atom processor with 512k of L2 cache and a 7 watt total kit TDP including chipset. The D410 for entry-level desktop PCs is a single-core Atom processor with 512k of L2 cache and a 12-watt total kit TDP including chipset, and the D510 for entry-level desktop PCs is a dual core Atom processor with 1MB L2 cache and a 15-watt total kit TDP including chipset. The new chips all run at 1.66GHz.

Gigabyte Adds SATA 6 Gb/s, USB 3 For AMD

Gigabyte brings USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 Gb/s goodness to AMD users.

USB 3.0 is one the most talked about technologies as of late, despite the fact that accessories and drives have yet to really emerge. Gigabyte is beginning to include USB 3.0 on some of its latest P55 and X58 boards as well as its AMD boards. Gigabyte told us that it will implement USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 Gb/s across its entire lineup going forward. The following are charts from Gigabyte that indicate which boards the company is currently shipping with support for USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 Gb/s:

Out of Gigabyte's current crop of eight boards, the beefiest Intel board is Gigabyte's GA-EX58A-UD7, while the GA-790FXTA-UD5 takes the front for AMD. The "A" at the end of the chipset moniker denotes a board with USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 Gb/s. Gigabyte's fast adoption of USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 Gb/s hopefully means we won't have to wait too long before device manufacturers come out with supporting devices.

We briefly tested with an external Buffalo USB 3.0 1 TB drive. Knowing that the 1 TB Samsung Spinpoint HD103SJ HDD wouldn't do justice, we removed it and swapped in an Intel X25-M G2 80 GB drive and that gave us a fast 238 MB/s rate. Clearly, USB 3.0 has a lot of headroom and is plenty fast enough to handle any current generation SATA 3.0 Gb/s device.

Unfortunately, the back-end of the Buffalo drive is also a SATA 3.0 Gb/s. so it won't support any upcoming SATA 6.0 Gb/s drives. Despite this, even today's fastest SSDs aren't fast enough to saturate SATA 3.0 Gb/s.

The highlight of the bunch is Gigabyte's GA-790FXTA-UD5, which sits at the top of Gigabyte's AMD offering.

In our recent review of Gigabyte's P55A-UD4P, we indicated that Gigabyte's entire P55 lineup had PCIe lanes dedicated to supporting the onboard USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 Gb/s controllers, effectively limiting bandwidth to the graphics cards. Here's a quote from that review:

Two of the primary graphics card’s 16 PCIe lanes supply its USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 Gb/s controllers, and Gigabyte disables six more lanes to make the upper slot an effective x8 interface. The USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 Gb/s controllers revert to the chipset’s 2.5 GT/s lanes whenever two graphics cards are installed, to preserve the x8 transfers each graphics card needs for optimal CrossFire or SLI performance.

Thus, users with a single graphics card must sacrifice half of its peak bandwidth to enable 5.0 Gb transfers to the USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 Gb/s controllers, while those with two cards must live with 2.5 Gb/s bandwidth limits on USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 Gb/s controllers. Neither of these sacrifices is huge or even noticeable on most of today’s hardware, yet anyone trying to future-proof their system could be left cold.

Fortunately for AMD users, the GA-790FXTA-UD5 doesn't suffer from the same limitations because AMD's 790FX has a total of 48 PCIe lanes while the P55 chipset only has 16.

The GA-EX58A-UD7

Gigabyte says that it's X58A-UD7 is its top of the line board, and rightly so. Not only is the board USB 3.0/SATA 6.0 Gb/s ready, it even comes with support for liquid cooling. If you don't have a liquid cooling setup, the board ships with a separate heatsink module that attaches to the chipset module. Simply fill in the gap with something like Arctic Silver and screw down the heat sink board. In fact, you can use both the supplied heatsink board and liquid cooling if you so choose.

On the rear of the GA-EX58A-UD7, Gigabyte has implemented a combo eSATA/USB solution, in that both of the eSATA connectors also support USB connections. The two blue USB connections at the end are USB 3.0 ports but will also take USB 1 and USB 2 devices.

Gigabyte indicated that its X58 based boards, like its 790FX boards, do not have the PCIe lane limitation of the P55 boards. Gigabyte will add to its P55 lineup with a GA-P55A-UD7, which will integrate PLX and nForce 200 PCIe bridges by the end of December. In our recent review, we found that the PCIe lane sharing with the high-speed USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 Gb/s controllers doesn't really impact performance in today's apps but those who choose to use CrossFire or SLI on P55 will have to sacrifice USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 Gb/s--at least until Gigabyte ships its GA-P55A-UD7.

Microsoft Phones to be Tegra Powered?

Microsoft yesterday announced Windows Phone 7, the company's newest mobile OS. However, the company said nothing about its plans for releasing actual phones.

Back in September, when the blogosphere was buzzing with rumors of Microsoft's Project Pink, there were two devices everyone was talking about; the Turtle and the Pure. These were supposedly Microsoft-branded phones that the company was developing in conjunction with Project Pink. FCC filings have since confirmed that at least the Turtle is real and manufactured by Sharp (Sharp also produced the Sidekick for Danger, a company owned by Microsoft).

Today WMExperts has some specs for both the Pure and the Turtle. First thing you need to know is that both the Turtle and the Pure will come in GSM and CDMA versions. The CDMA version of Turtle will be called Pride and the CDMA version of Pure will be called Lion.

WME also claims the two devices will have a 'strong connection to Nvidia's Tegra.' Considering the Zune HD is already powered by Nvidia's Tegra chipset, it wouldn't be too surprising if Microsoft decided to chuck the chip into both the Turtle and the Pure too.

Though a kick-butt Tegra processor would be a dream, the resolutions WME is reporting suggest that these phones could be a little closer to entry level devices. The Turtle is said to pack a 320x240 display, while the Pure is said to have a resolution of 480x320.

Previous rumors suggest the phones won't run Windows Phone 7, which could be a deal breaker for a lot of people. If Microsoft decides to put an older iteration of Windows Mobile onto these devices, the company runs the risk of having people think the phones are already out of date.

eBay Seller Auctions AMD 12-Core Opterons

A manufacturer is selling a set of 4 for a starting bid of $7000.

Although AMD hasn't officially launched the Opteron 6174 "Magny-Cours" CPU, custom-built server and workstation manufacturer Oakville Mehlville Computers (OMC) is already on eBay selling AMD's 12-core CPU. X-bit Labs, who actually first spied the auction, said that the chips do not look like engineering samples, and could be from the first mass-production batch.

The auction's starting bid for a tray of four microprocessors is $7,000 USD, with a "Buy It Now" price of $8,000 USD. Designed for the socket G34 platform, the Opteron 6174 has a clock speed of 2.20 GHz, 12 MB of unified level-three cache, and 6 MB of level-two cache (512 KB of cache per core).

Despite the appearance of the Opteron 6174 on eBay, AMD would not confirm with X-Bit if the company has already began shipments of the new processor to hardware stores and online outlets. "What I can confirm for you at this point is that Magny-Cours is on track to launch in the current quarter," said Phil Hughes, a spokesperson for AMD.

Given that OMC isn't offering a mainboard (or cooling system) with the Opteron 6174 chips up for auction, there's really no way to test the chips to see if they actually work. That's a bad thing given that the seller isn't accepting returns. And although OMC has a 99.2-percent positive feedback, this looks like a good auction to avoid until the G34 platform is at hand.

S3 Dual-GPU Card Competes with ATI Eyefinity

VIA Technologies plans to offer an alternative to AMD's ATI Eyefinity technology.

VIA Technologies said that it's sporting a few products at the Digital Signage Expo 2010 trade show held next week at the Las Vegas Convention Center. One of the products mentioned is the company's upcoming S3 Graphics Chrome 5400E x2, a dual-GPU graphics card aimed to take on AMD's ATI Eyefinity technology.

"The S3 Graphics 5400E x2 is a highly integrated and flexible video card that features dual graphics and multimedia processors," the company said. "Boasting extreme hardware acceleration of the latest HD video codecs, the S3 Graphics 5400E x2 uses S3 Graphics' PanoChrome technology to provide up to four independent HD video streams at resolutions of 1080p on up to eight displays, employing a variety of display modes and configurations."

The company's press release provided a few more details, indicating that the card provides built-in Genlock support for synchronized source timing, and support for Span, Extended, and Clone view configurations. The hardware-accelerated HD video codecs include H.264, VC-1 and WMV-HD. Unfortunately, there's no real hardware-based info such as its core clock speed and on-board memory amount.

VIA said that it will offer a taste of the dual-GPU graphics card during the show, and will eventually provide samples to ODM customers in the USA sometime Q2 2010 or later. More information about what VIA is bringing to the trade show next week can be seen here.

Metro 2033 for PC Supports DX 11, 3D Vision

The PC version is receiving special love from Nvidia.

Wednesday THQ and Nvidia announced that the upcoming PC game Metro 2033 will support the latter company's 3D Vision and PhysX technology. THQ also added that the first-person shooter will support "a number of advanced DirectX 11 (DX11) features" including Depth of Field effects and Full Tessellation on character models.

"The 4A Engine is one of the most advanced game engines we've ever worked with, and with DX11 enabled, Metro 2033 is undoubtedly one of the best looking PC games of 2010," said Tony Tamasi, Senior Vice President of Content and Technology at NVIDIA. "Combine this with NVIDIA 3D Vision and PhysX and you will experience mind-blowing visuals."

Set for a March 16 release, Metro 2033 takes place in the "shattered subway of a post apocalyptic event." Players must leave the confounds of an underground settlement (Metro Station-City) to warn the remnants of mankind of an impending threat that could wipe out the human race. Players must venture through the catacombs of the defunct subway and out into the wastelands.

While the storyline sounds rehashed and exciting at the same time, the advantages of 3D Vision and DX11 should make the cliche storyline feel less regurgitated.

Sorry Xbox 360 gamers, you only get the "vanilla" version.

Acer Outs First Nvidia Ion 2 Netbook With Optimus

While the concept of a netbook did not originally call for specialized 3D and HD video rendering capabilities, the intervention of Nvidia with its Ion chipset gave the Intel Atom wings that it wouldn't otherwise be able to have. At the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona, Acer outted the next-generation of Nvidia Ion that would pair up with the new Atom Pine Trail platform in its Aspire One 532G.

Given that the Pine Trail platform means that the Atom already comes with integrated packaged with the CPU, Acer's offering will actually feature two graphics parts – one from Intel and the other from Nvidia.

While the outward appearance of the Aspire One 532G is similar to other 10.1-inch netbooks, the real magic happens inside thanks to Nvidia Optimus, which allows the discrete GeForce GPU to take over whenever there's some heavy lifting to do. Specifics regarding the GPU weren't clear, but some reports have it pegged as either the G310 or GT218. We expect Nvidia to release full details next month at CeBit.

Nevertheless, the Ion 2 chipset will allow users to make real practical use of the 1080p HDMI out and battery life of up to 10 hours when not messing around with intensive tasks.

Acer says that its Aspire One 532G is 1-inch thin and about 1 kg in weight will be available in three contemporary colors – Sapphire Blue, Ruby Red and Pearl Silver when it ships at the end of Q1 2010.

Nvidia Employee Didn't Say "Bomb" on Airplane

A supposed bomb threat on board a flight headed to Hong Kong led to a jailed Nvidia employee.

Silicon Valley's Mercury News reports that a marketing director for Nvidia now faces a misdemeanor charge. Apparently the Nvidia employee told a flight attendant at the San Francisco International Airport he was carrying a bomb in his jacket.

Yushing Lui, 47, denies he said anything in regards to the supposed concealed device.

The bomb incident took place Thursday on a Cathay Pacific Airways plane just before taking off to Hong Kong. Lui was heading back home after a six-month shift here in the States.

While seating himself in the business class section, the flight attendant offered to take his jacket. When asked if he had anything in the jacket, Lui responded by saying "I have a bomb in my jacket."

The flight attendant backed away from the Nvidia marketing director and informed the captain. It's unclear if the attendant took the coat, or left it behind with Lui.

After a quick call, the resident San Francisco Airport Police arrived and examined the coat, however there were no sign of a bomb.

City police thus escorted Lui off the airport premisis and took him to the San Mateo County Jail. Lui denied saying anything about a bomb while under interrogation, but rather "something to the effect that he did not have a million dollars in his pocket," prosecutors said.

Lui was later freed on a $10,000 bail, with a trial scheduled for March 8.

Chief deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe told Mercury News that even if Lui was joking about a bomb, such remarks on board an aircraft can lead to prosecution.

Assassin's Creed II for PC Uses Only DX9 Features

Got a fancy new video card? Assassin's Creed II won't take notice -- but it's still a beautiful game.

Assassin's Creed II was one of the best games I played and one of the few that I finished in 2009. I couldn't hold out for a PC release, but those of you who are waiting until early March to play this superlative sequel will get a few perks.

David Champagne, 3D Lead Programmer of Assassin's Creed II, said in an interview with PC Games Hardware, "We spent quite some time improving the performances of the PC version by taking advantage of multi-core processors. The PC version also supports much higher resolutions than the console version and multi-sampling modes up to 8X (as opposed to the console version which only supports 2X)."

Assassin's Creed II will also take full advantage of quad core processors, especially for those who can process more than a single thread. "We now support up to 8 threads. Our engine being mainly task-based since AC1, it has been pretty easy to scale up and parallelize the various tasks all over the multiple threads." Champagne added. "Most of our game systems, including AI, physics, animation and rendering, are taking advantage of multi-threading. … Physics is a task as any other tasks in our engine. We don't reserve a specific thread to perform the physics calculations. We didn't have the chance to look into Nvidia's Physx."

Those of you expecting more whiz-bang effects over the console versions will be disappointed, however, as Assassin's Creed II is a DirectX 9 affair.

"We are using the same rendering engine as the Xbox 360 version which is based on DX9. Integrating DX11 in our renderer would have definitely been too much time-consuming given our release date," said Champagne. "Assassin's Creed II has no specific support for DX10 (but the game still runs smoothly on both DX10 and DX11 systems)."

While that piece of news is disappointing for gamers who have purchased a new ATI Radeon HD for DX11 hotness, Champagne cites a Steam survey that has 40 percent of gamers still using Windows XP.

So when will he feel the need to jump to the newer API? "I guess when most of the gamers will have switched to DX11. ;) According to Steam HW Survey, 40% of the gamers are still playing under Windows XP. I think we'll have to wait a bit..." he answered.

Nvidia Reports Positive Q4 Results on GPU Sales

Nvidia may still be without a DirectX 11 part on the market, but it's still reporting good results for its investors. Nvidia this week reported revenue of $982.5 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010 ended Jan. 31, 2010, up 9 percent from the previous quarter and more than double the $481.1 million reported in the same period a year earlier. For the full fiscal year, revenue was $3.3 billion compared with $3.4 billion for the fiscal year ended Jan. 25, 2009, a decrease of 3 percent.

Quarter on quarter, desktop GPU revenue was up 19 percent, notebook GPU revenue was up 27

percent and Quadro graphics revenue was up 25 percent.

"Nvidia's business continued to accelerate in the fourth quarter, with strong demand in our PC and workstation markets," said Jen-Hsun Huang, Nvidia's president and chief executive officer.

"While the yield of chips made using the latest 40nm process has improved significantly, demand continues to exceed our constrained supply. Looking ahead this year, we are excited to raise the bar again with our next-generation Fermi GPU architecture; our Tegra mobile processor will enable a new class of amazing mobile devices like tablets; and our 3D Vision glasses and accompanying technology will bring a whole new dimension to personal computing."

Sony to Charge $20 to Used SOCOM PSP Buyers

Is there any good reason to buy a used copy of SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3 for the PSP?

With the popularity of PSPs with modded firmware, it's only a natural concern for Sony that its games might be pirated. Sony's answer to this is to have each player register online – not unlike some PC game titles that are attached to services like Steam.

SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3 for the PSP, which will ship on a UMD, requires gamers to register on the PlayStation Network using an included voucher. While those who buy this new will have the registration voucher included at no extra cost, those who pick up the UMD on the used market will have to pay $20 for the entitlement on PSN.

John Koller, director of hardware marketing at SCEA, said in an IGN interview, "Today's consumers are more tech savvy and better connected to the internet than ever before. Piracy continues to be an issue of concern for the PSP platform. SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3 is a trial run for a new initiative we are exploring for the platform. We will continue to explore this as an opportunity for the platform going forward, but we have no announcements to make on future iterations at this time."

This system would directly combat piracy as well as drive some used-sale revenue to Sony. The downside to this, of course, it that it will greatly diminish the resale value of the game for the original owners. Given that a new copy sells for $37, this already creates a $17 ceiling for the sale of a used copy.

Nvidia CEO: Fermi to Hit the ''Full Stride'' in Q2

Nvidia is gearing up to release its DirectX 11 GPU part on the world sometime during the company's present financial quarter, which started on January 31 and April 30, but mass availability of the product won't arrive until sometime in the next quarter.

As quoted by X-bit labs, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said during a recent conference call that the second quarter, spanning the time between May and July.

"Q2 [of FY 2011] is going to be the quarter when Fermi is hitting the full stride. It will not just be one Fermi product, there will be a couple of Fermi products to span many different price ranges, but also the Fermi products will span GeForce, Quadro and Tesla," Huang said. "So, we are going to be ramping now on Fermi architecture products through Q2 and we are building a lot of it."

As for when the transition would fully happy from current-gen parts to the new ones, Huang responded, "All of that just depends on 40 nm supply and we are trying to finesse it the best we possibly can. For the entry-level products, the truth is that the new architectures […] are probably not extremely well appreciated anyhow. […] Our current-generation GPUs are fabulous and all the things that mainstream consumers would use their computer for."

School Confirms Ability to Control Student Webcam

School confirms turning on student's webcam.

Yesterday it came to light that a student is suing LowerMerionSchool District in Philadelphia allegedly remotely activating his webcam. The remote activation of his webcam was exposed when student Blake J. Robbins was disciplined for "improper behavior in his home" by the Vice Principal, who provided a photo taken by the webcam as evidence.

In response to the allegations, the superintendent of the school district, Dr. Christopher McGinley, wrote in an announcement:

"Last year, our district became one of the first school systems in the United States to provide laptop computers to all high school students," he wrote, then confirming the ability for administrators to turn on cameras. "The laptops do contain a security feature intended to track lost, stolen and missing laptops. This feature has been deactivated effective today."

He added, "We regret if this situation has caused any concern or inconvenience among our students and families. We are reviewing the matter and will provide an additional update as soon as information becomes available."

McGinley then provided a short FAQ on the webcams on student laptops.

• Why are webcams installed on student laptops?
The Apple computers that the District provides to students come equipped with webcams and students are free to utilize this feature for educational purposes.
• Why was the remote tracking-security feature installed?
Laptops are a frequent target for theft in schools and off school property. The security feature was installed to help locate a laptop in the event it was reported lost, missing or stolen so that the laptop could be returned to the student.
• How did the security feature work?
Upon a report of a suspected lost, stolen or missing laptop, the feature was activated by the District's security and technology departments. The tracking-security feature was limited to taking a still image of the operator and the operator's screen. This feature has only been used for the limited purpose of locating a lost, stolen or missing laptop. The District has not used the tracking feature or web cam for any other purpose or in any other manner whatsoever.

• Do you anticipate reactivating the tracking-security feature?
Not without express written notification to all students and families.

ok, so I go to this school, and there are a few things to be cleared up.

firstly, every student was given a MacBook by the school to take home and use for the whole year. These MacBooks however have the capability of being remotely accessed by the school at any time, a feature originally intended to be used in case the computer was lost. The problem is, someone has apparently been caught doing something illegal while at home through this camera, and thus the lawsuit began.

The principal made a statement today during school saying the school district would never use the camera to spy on kids and that the whole situation was being blown out of proportion.
Apparently the laptop was never paid for and was therefore believe to be stolen and therefore they turned on the camera to see who was using it.

Google Gets Green Light to Buy, Sell Electricity

Google officially allowed to buy and sell electricity.

Back in January, Google put in a request to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the regulatory body that oversees the power grid. Applying under a subsidiary called Google Energy, the search giant was seeking permission to buy and sell electricity on the wholesale market.

However, Google Energy is not about entering the electricity market. Rather, Google is just eager to reduce its carbon footprint. At the time, a Google spokesperson told CNet that Google wants to buy the highest quality and most affordable renewable energy wherever it can.

"Right now, we can't buy affordable, utility-scale, renewable energy in our markets," said Google rep Niki Fenwick. "We want to buy the highest quality, most affordable renewable energy wherever we can and use the green credits."

The FERC today granted Google Energy market-based rate authorization. This means Google has been approved for the sale of energy, capacity, and ancillary services at market-based rates. However, the Commission clarified that neither Google Energy nor its affiliates "own or control any generation or transmission" facilities.

CNet's Candace Lombardi writes that it is not unusual for large corporations to be granted the authority to trade in the wholesale electricity market for the purpose of managing their own energy costs. However, it seems Google hasn't quite ruled out entering the energy business.

"We don't have any concrete plans. We want the ability to buy and sell electricity in case it becomes part of our portfolio," Fenwick told CNET News in January.

Sify reports that the armored vehicle is a byproduct of 2008's Mumbai terrorist attacks. While we're betting that the Indian special forces secretly had golf in mind, the Anti-Terrorist Assault Cart was created to go where bulkier armored trucks can't venture: hotel lobbies, narrow corridors, and other confined spaces.

"It's a product of our sense of helplessness over the casualties we took in the attacks," said managing director J.B. Sehrawat. "We put our heads and hearts together and came up with the ATAC."

According to the designers--Metaltech Motor Bodies Pvt Ltd.--the armored cart can reach speeds of up to 15 MPH, and can run for six hours on a single charge. The vehicle can also withstand close range fire (thanks to bullet-proof windows) and grenade blasts, perfect for digging out terrorists tucked away in abandoned buildings and narrow caves.

Despite the damage this thing could do on a golf course, this armored cart would be the ideal hiding spot after saying the wrong thing and the significant other comes after you with a golf club.

Sony Ericsson: We Refused to Build Google Phone

I knew there had to be a reason why it looked like every other Android phone out there.

So far a lot of the Android phones on the market have been made by HTC. So, when Android fans learned the Nexus One was yet another HTC device, they were a little disappointed. Some had hoped they'd see something truly different from Google and when the Nexus One launched, it seemed the only truly different thing was that you could purcahse the device through Google.

However, it seems HTC may not have been Google's first choice either. Sony Ericsson has said the search giant approached the company to make the phone but Ericsson said no. Crave reports that in an interview for a Swedish newspaper, Sony Ericsson chief, Bert Nordberg, said that Google had approached his company about making the Nexus One but he had refused because Sony Ericsson wanted release phones under its own brand only. Nordberg went on to say that Sony prefers to rely on its own efforts to make it in the US market.

Despite the Google snub, Ericsson has plans to release Android devices under its own brand. The company has plans for a handful of Android devices to be released this year. Crave reports that the first of these, the Xperia X10, is expected to be released later this month.

Recent Google Hack Traced to Chinese Schools

Those darn hacker kids!

The New York Times reports that investigators have traced the recent hacking attacks on Google back to computers located at two schools in China, one of which has close ties to the Chinese military. The attacks may have even started earlier than previously believed, possibly attacking Google and other companies as early as April 2009. There's even indication that one link leads to a specific science class taught by a Ukrainian professor.

The two schools in question are Shanghai Jiaotong University and the Lanxiang Vocational School. The University provides one of China's top computer science programs while the vocational school was established with military support and trains many computer scientists for the military. The NYT said that the vocational school's network is maintained by a company close to Google's competitor, Baidu.

Lanxiang Vocational School is also where the Ukrainian professor teaches science.

Speculation is a mixed bag: it's believed that the vocational school is being used as camouflage for government operations. Others claim that a third country is using the schools as a cover for a "false flag" intelligence operation. There's also talk that the attacks were nothing more than criminal industrial espionage on a grand scale, set to leech technology secrets from American companies.

There's also the possibility that students were testing their hacking skills by breaking into foreign websites. A professor at Jiaotong’s School of Information Security Engineering said this was actually normal, however he also said that hackers could have hijacked the university's IP address during the Google attack.

For the last year or so, Microsoft has been fighting claims from Europe that bundling Internet Explorer with Windows is anti-competitive. The EU argued that, because Windows has the most common operating system, it was unfair that Microsoft force all those users to use IE without first informing them of their options.

MS and the EU recently came to an agreement that said the software giant had to offer users a choice via a ballot screen with the top five browsers listed along with a brief description. Unfortunately, Opera and Firefox still found reason to complain. The two said that with Internet Explorer appearing first on the list, Microsoft still had an advantage.

Today, Microsoft is showing off the final revision of its browser ballot screen. Each European user will be presented with this screen when they try to connect to the Web for the first time:

A set of parents in the United Kingdom who had grown tired of seeing their children glued to their gadgets have banned phones, consoles, computers and television in the home.

The Daily Mail this week carriers a story about Miranda and Richard Jones, a couple who have banned gadgets from their home. DM reports that their social experiment began six years ago when they noticed one of their children was 'less grumpy' when he wasn't allowed to play computer games.

"We would have dinner and I felt like it was something they had to do between playing their games," said Miranda.

And so, over a six-year period, the couple began slowly weaning their children off their gadgets. The games and computer were taken away, the children were not allowed have cell phones and television time was limited. When it came time for the family to move, they never had cable installed so even the TV became redundant. Though her children watch DVDs on the weekends, Mr and Mrs Jones say the family is much happier now.

"I wanted the children to have a proper childhood," Miranda said. "They have accepted that spending time on computers and mobile phones is something other kids do and they don’t. Instead they go out more and see friends and have face to face conversations with them."

Their 18-year-old says that over all, the ban has been good for him. ‘I think it’s worked very well for my friendships, I actually get to see my friends rather than just talking to them on the internet."

However, not everyone has been as accepting as the kids. Their school has complained to the parents, claiming it is not fair to deny the children access to computers and television, but Mrs Jones says the fears that other kids would alienate her children have been unfounded. She also says the fact that they do not have a computer has not stopped her oldest son, Joshua, from being offered a place in Cambridge University.

Josh says the lack of computer hasn't interfered with school at all. 'It’s not interfered with my school life either because, since I did my GCSEs, I haven’t actually been assigned any online work.' Josh goes on to say he's always found alternatives to using a computer for homework, 'I have always found alternatives to doing research online and my parents have been really good with getting us books instead.'

Apple's iPad Ebooks Won't Use Adobe DRM

An Adobe executive told Computerworld Thursday that Apple will not use Adobe Systems Inc.'s e-book DRM technology on the iPad. Instead, according to an unnamed source, Apple will offer its own FairPlay DRM technology to publishers instead. Currently Apple uses FairPlay to protect movies and TV shows offered on iTunes, however the company discontinued its use with music last year.

Nick Bogaty, senior business development manager at Adobe, told Computerworld that iPad consumers will be locked into Apple's ecosystem by incorporating FairPlay. This means that e-books purchased through the iBookstore will be locked to the iPad, leaving them nontransferable to other devices. Given Apple's track record with the iPhone and iPod models, this move shouldn't be surprising.

"With iBooks, there's no freedom of choice," Bogaty said. He also added that Adobe's DRM isn't quite so restrictive, allowing consumers to use any e-reader they want, and to purchase e-books from any online retailer that uses Content Server. That's obviously not the case with FairPlay.

Ebooks designed with Flash videos may still sell via Apple's iBooks app. Instead of the imbedded video, readers will see a static screenshot in its place. The text, however, will remain unaffected. It's also possible that Apple will reject e-books built around Flash objects, identifying them as less secure and requiring publishers to generate Apple-friendly versions.

Hulu May Charge Subscriptions on iPad

The iPad may be Hulu's guinea pig for testing a subscription service.

Recently we reported that Hulu may be working on an Apple iPad-friendly version of its video streaming service. Remarks made by CEO Jason Kilar already point to upcoming support for mobile platforms, and there are even rumors of an iPhone and iPod Touch app in development.

Unfortunately, we may not see our favorite shows on the Apple platforms-- the iPad in particular-- without having to pay a monthly subscription fee. News of this type of premium Hulu service isn't anything new: execs at NBC, Fox, and Disney have tossed the idea back and forth for some time.

While AllThingsD doesn't reveal its source of information, a subscription-based, premium Hulu service is a "likely scenario" for the iPad. The revenue will supposedly put money back into the "money-losing" website, and compensate for a reduction of viewers on cable and satellite TV.

But Hulu and the network execs haven't settled on a plan to bring a subscription-based service to the video site. "It’s a tricky balancing act that we’re trying to fine tune before we go out," the secret source said. "Everyone’s concerned about making a strong offering at a good price, and not undercutting the existing business."

As we reported earlier, the biggest hurdle of bringing Hulu to the iPad is getting around Flash, a feature Apple refuses to support. If rumors are correct, we may see Hulu Mobile arrive when Apple's iPad finally hits retail shelves. Expect more details in the coming weeks.

Man Who Tweeted Airport Bomb Hoax is Charged

A man who tweeted about blowing up an airport if his flight was delayed has been charged.

In January, Paul Chambers was planning a little holiday to Ireland to escape the bucketloads of snow that had been dumped on England. The week before he was due to fly, he began to worry that his flight would be canceled because of the snow. "Robin Hood airport is closed," he tweeted. "You've got a week and a bit to get your shit together, otherwise I'm blowing the airport sky high!!"

A week later Chambers was brought into the police station under the Terrorism Act and questioned for 7 hours. "I had to explain Twitter to them in its entirety because they'd never heard of it," Chambers told the Independent at the time. "Then they asked all about my home life, and how work was going, and other personal things. The lead investigator kept asking, 'Do you understand why this is happening?' and saying, 'It is the world we live in'."

Chambers was released on bail; and this week police said the 26-year-old man has been charged with sending a menacing message.

The Independent cites a police spokesperson as saying, "A 26-year-old Doncaster man has been charged with sending by a public communications network a message that was grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character contrary to Section 127 of the Communications Act 2003."

A force spokesman said Chambers is set to stand before a court of law today.

LED Video Table Plays Movies, Games

It's a cool concept but could ultimately be a pain in the neck.

Although not quite as nifty as an armored golf cart, the LED video table from Customized Designs would be rather cool to have in the living room or gaming area. According to the manufacturer, the device can connect to any video feed, whether its from a laptop or an iPod Touch.

This might be ideal when you want to play a game while the significant other watches soap operas on the TV, or if you want to display a subliminal message to keep those nasty feet off the furniture.

The drawback to this gadget is that it's not cheap by any means-- the basic version without video feeds costs just under $1499. For an additional $150, Customized Designs will throw in the LED underglow lighting as seen in the image. There's also an option to purchase a netbook with pre-programmed visuals, costing an extra $350.

The table actually looks rather simple: a 32-inch LCD screen mounted onto an upright backbox. The specs reveal that the tabletop consists of 3/8-inch glass to protect the LCD from spills and scratches. The actual dimensions of the box are 37 (W) x 25 (D) x 20 (H), and comes in various finishes.

ZoomWe tend to be pretty protective of our gadgets; sometimes we invest far too much money in carry cases, covers and shields to protect our shiny new toys. But inevitably, little portable devices end up exposed and dropped far more often than our stay-at-home goods.

Digital cameras go with us wherever we go, be it in the dry or humid, hot or cold. Sony's unveiled a new Cyber-shot camera, model DSC-TX5, that it claims to be "waterproof, freeze proof, shockproof and dust proof."

While other camera companies have similarly tough cameras, Sony boasts that its offering at under 1 inch is the thinnest with optical image stabilization.

"Only Sony can deliver a technology-packed, ultra slim, fashionable T-series camera that is also durable. Until now, you couldn't have it all in one camera" said Kelly Davis, director of the Digital Imaging business at Sony Electronics. "It is so versatile because it's a great camera for both indoor and outdoor usage. You can easily take it from a day at the beach with the kids to a cocktail party with friends. This camera is also great for activities such as snorkeling, snowboarding or boating."

The 10.2 megapixel camera is waterproof in up to 10 feet of water for an hour, and its "Exmor R" CMOS sensor is certified to be freeze proof down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, shockproof up to about a 5-foot drop and dust proof.

Look for this starting April for around $350.

Report: Most Windows 7 PCs Max Out RAM, Choke

When I pay the money to drop at least 6GB of RAM into my system, I want it all to be put to use. Compared to Windows XP, both Windows Vista and Windows 7 make more active use of system memory. But according to Devil Mountain Software's community-based Exo.performance.network (XPnet) CTO, Craig Barth, that sort of RAM management results in undesirable performance.

According to the Computerworld report, XPnet found that 40 percent of its Windows XP machines ran into low-memory situations, while 86 percent of its Windows 7 machines are regularly consuming 90 percent to 95 percent of their available RAM.

Barth said that the hungry RAM consumption of Windows 7 result in slow-downs. "The vast majority of Windows 7 machines over the last several months are very heavily-memory saturated," he said. "From a performance standpoint, that has an immediate impact on the machine."

"This is alarming," Barth said of Windows 7 machines' resource consumption. "For the OS to be pushing the hardware limits this quickly is amazing. Windows 7 is not the lean, mean version of Vista that you may think it is."

Alarming findings aside, XPnet observed that Windows 7 PCs sport an average of 3.3GB of RAM, compared to 1.7GB for Windows XP and 2.7GB for Windows Vista machines.

We recall that the design of Windows Vista (and by extension, Windows 7) has it consuming more RAM for practical, useful purposes rather than letting it sit idle. Nevertheless, we have contacted Microsoft for an official answer to this memory issue. More to come.

Assassin's Creed II for PC Locked Down by DRM

Some of you are going to hate this.

While some game publishers are getting a little more customer-friendly with its DRM efforts, Ubisoft has fused some pretty strict protection-schemes into its upcoming games that could cause some big headaches for PC gamers.

Last month Ubisoft revealed a new service that requires gamers to be signed in to a custom account and connected to the internet in order to play games.

PC Gamer UK received its review copies of Assassin's Creed II and Settlers VII and reported that the games aren't at all friendly towards gamers with shoddy internet connections. "If you get disconnected while playing, you're booted out of the game. All your progress since the last checkpoint or savegame is lost, and your only options are to quit to Windows or wait until you're reconnected," the site reported.

This means that any gaming session of Assassin's Creed II you may have running can be taken down by your ISP failing, your wireless signal being weak, your router on the blink, or simply just someone pulling any number of plugs. Even worse, what happens when Ubisoft's Master servers are down?

Ubisoft's seemingly restrictive service does have a few benefits: it can sync your save games with the Ubisoft cloud so you can retrieve them from anywhere; and you're allowed to install the game as many times on as many PCs as you want (but you can only sign in at one machine at a time).

Ubisoft offered comment in an earlier story regarding its online-always service:

The platform requires a permanent Internet connection. We know this choice is controversial but we feel is justified by the gameplay advantages offered by the system and because most PCs are already connected to the Internet. This platform also offers protection against piracy, an important business element for Ubisoft and for the PC market in general as piracy has an important impact on this market. Any initiative that allows us to lower the impact of piracy on our PC games will also allow us to concentrate further effort to the creation and expansion of IPs for the PC - our goal is to deliver the best gaming experience to our customers, anywhere, anytime."

Rootkit Confirmed to Cause Win XP Update BSoDs

Earlier this month, Microsoft issued an update for Windows XP machines that suddenly triggered occurrences of Blue Screen of Death and reboots. Microsoft went digging and found that the problem wasn't with the patch, but rather malware.

Windows XP users who were infected with the Alureon rootkit would experience the crashes following the Windows Update procedure.

Microsoft's Mike Reavey writes on its TechNet blog:

^{We wanted to provide you with an update on our ongoing investigation into the “blue screen” issues affecting a limited number of customers who installed MS10-015. We have been working around the clock with our customers, partners and several teams at Microsoft to determine the cause of these issues. Our investigation has concluded that the reboot occurs because the system is infected with malware, specifically the Alureon rootkit. We were able to reach this conclusion after the comprehensive analysis of memory dumps obtained from multiple customer machines and extensive testing against third party applications and software. The restarts are the result of modifications the Alureon rootkit makes to Windows Kernel binaries, which places these systems in an unstable state. In every investigated incident, we have not found quality issues with security update MS10-015. Our guidance remains the same: customers should continue to deploy this month’s security updates and make sure their systems are up-to-date with the latest anti-virus software.}

School Used Student Webcams to Spy on Them

Ever have the feeling that you're being watched? With built-in webcams now bring standard on most laptops, sitting there, staring straight at you opposite the LCD screen, one might feel paranoid about voyeurs.

Such fears may not be completely irrational, however, as a student is suing his school in Philadelphia for remotely activating his webcam, reported Boing Boing. The remote activation of his webcam was exposed when student Blake J. Robbins was disciplined for "improper behavior in his home" by the Vice Principal, who provided a photo taken by the webcam as evidence.

Gizmodo supposedly heard from some of the students involved in the class action suit. One said that his 2008 MacBook's camera light would turn on at random.

Frequently, the green lights next to our iSight webcams will turn on. The school district claims that this is just a glitch. We are all doubting this now.

Another student added:

I questioned the IT guy about why it was happening he said that it was because people logged out when an application using the camera was on, he also stated that they could in fact go and look through your webcam it would just violate the fifth [amendment] and that's why they didn't.

Hotmail Breached; Microsoft Now Investigating

Hotmail showed other people's inboxes.

Microsoft said that it is investigating a security snafu at its Hotmail property that occurred earlier this week. Some Hotmail users report that, upon logging into their account, they would see the inbox that belonged to someone else.

Microsoft quickly issued a statement: "Microsoft is investigating reports of a limited number of instances in which Windows Live customers may have access to other customers' accounts when accessing their account through mobile web browser. Microsoft takes customers' privacy seriously, and immediately upon learning of these reports, we started an investigation."

The company hasn't yet revealed what, if anything, it has discovered yet, but pledged to take appropriate action once it has completed the investigation.
